Der Sand Scorcher ist so ziemlich das ikonischste Modell, das Tamiya je veröffentlicht hat.
Aufgebaut auf dem klassischen „Special Racing Buggy"-Chassis ist der Sand Scorcher – ursprünglich 1979 erschienen – heute einfach Kult. Meiner ist Tamiyas Wiederauflage von 2010 (#58452), eine originalgetreue Neuauflage des ursprünglichen SRB. Vorder- und Hinterachse zitieren noch immer das große Vorbild, und auch das Fahrverhalten kommt dem ziemlich nahe. 🙂
Mein Scorcher war ein Geschenk, das mich wirklich glücklich gemacht hat. Der Karton stand bis Juni 2026 im Regal – dann hat es mich gepackt und ich habe das Modell vor einem Urlaub gebaut. Aktuell teilt er sich seine Karosserie noch mit dem Blitzer Beetle, aber das soll sich langfristig ändern.
Das ist übrigens der dritte Scorcher, den ich gebaut habe. Den ersten wusste ich vor vielen Jahren noch nicht zu schätzen, den zweiten habe ich für meinen Freund Martin gebaut – und der dritte ist dieser hier.

The Sand Scorcher is just about the most iconic model Tamiya has ever released.
Built on the classic “Special Racing Buggy” chassis, the Sand Scorcher – originally released in 1979 – is pure cult today. Mine is Tamiya’s 2010 re-release (#58452), a faithful reissue of the original SRB. Its front and rear axles still echo the full-size original, and the way it drives comes pretty close, too. 🙂
My Scorcher was a gift, which made me genuinely happy. The box sat on the shelf until June 2026 – then it got hold of me and I built the model. Right now it still shares its body with the Blitzer Beetle, but that's set to change in the long run.
This is, by the way, the third Scorcher I've built. The first one, many years ago, I didn't know how to appreciate; the second I built for my friend Martin; and the third is this one.

Zeit für eine Reinigung / Working at the Car Wash
Damit sich auf diesem legendären Chassis kein Rost breitmacht, habe ich heute alles gründlich gereinigt. Der feine Sand hatte es tatsächlich bis ins Getriebe geschafft – das muss ich mir zu Hause noch genauer anschauen. Ansonsten hat das Chassis alles ohne eine einzige Verschleißspur überstanden – auch dank der Schutzfolie auf der Aluplatte.
Manchmal zahlt es sich eben aus, mit eingeschaltetem Hirn zu fahren! 😎

To keep rust off this legendary chassis, I gave everything a thorough clean today. The fine sand had actually made it all the way into the gearbox – I'll need to take a proper look at that back home. Otherwise the chassis came through without a single mark of wear – thanks in part to the protective film on the alu plate.
Sometimes it just pays to drive with your brain switched on! 😎

Die erste RICHTIGE Fahrt / The first REAL ride
Weiter geht's! Der Tausch des Karosseriehalters ging ziemlich flott – in weiser Voraussicht hatte ich alle früheren Prototypen eingepackt – und so habe ich den Scorcher kurz vor Urlaubsende noch einmal ordentlich ausgeführt.
Insgesamt hat das Modell jetzt rund 20 Minuten Laufzeit auf der Uhr. Kaputtgegangen ist diesmal nichts, aber der feine Sand hat sich seinen Weg in wirklich alles gesucht. Abgedichtete Kugellager sind bei diesem Modell ein absolutes Muss. Außerdem ist mir aufgefallen, dass der Lenkeinschlag ziemlich bescheiden ist – ich muss noch herausfinden, ob das serienmäßig so ist oder ob mein Hop-Up das verursacht hat.
Eines ist aber sicher: Der Sand Scorcher macht richtig, richtig viel Spaß! Gerade auf losem Sand ist er absolut in seinem Element. Mehr davon!

On we go! Swapping the body mount went pretty quickly – in my wisdom I'd packed all the earlier prototypes – and I took the Scorcher out for another proper run right before the holiday ended.
All told, the model now has about 20 minutes of run time on the clock. Nothing broke this time, but the fine sand worked its way into everything. Sealed bearings are an absolute must on this model. I also noticed the steering angle is pretty modest – I still need to figure out whether that's stock or something my hop-up brought on.
One thing's for sure, though: the Sand Scorcher is really, really good fun! It's absolutely made for loose sand in particular. More of this!

Die erste Fahrt! / The first ride!
Der Scorcher läuft!
Leider habe ich nach fünf Minuten schon den ersten Karosseriehalter zerstört. 😬 Eine kleine Bodenwelle hat den Oldtimer ausgehebelt, und die Blitzer-Karosserie hat es abgefangen – na ja, fast.
Ich hätte wohl doch den Rammer montieren sollen…

Sadly, after 5 minutes I destroyed the first of the body mounts. 😬 A little bump levered the old-timer up and the Blitzer body caught it – well, almost.
I really should have fitted the bumper after all …

Der erste Schritt ist getan / The first step is done
Ich habe wirklich lange überlegt, ob ich den Scorcher überhaupt bauen will – und heute dann doch angefangen. Am Sonntag geht es für ein paar Tage ans Meer – und der Sand Scorcher ist dafür einfach prädestiniert! 😁
Ein paar Probleme gibt es allerdings noch zu lösen:
- Die originale Lenkung ist ein absolutes No-Go. Es kommt ein Lenkungs-Setup aus dem Super Buggy Champ rein, mit angepasstem Karosseriehalter.
- Ich muss einen vernünftigen Akku unterbringen können. Ich kann nicht für jedes Modell einen eigenen Akku verwenden.

I thought about it for a really long time – whether I actually wanted to build the Scorcher – and yet I started today anyway. On Sunday I'm off to the seaside for a few days – and the Sand Scorcher is simply predestined for that! 😁
There are a few problems to solve, though:
- The original steering is a complete no-go. A steering setup from the Super Buggy Champ is going in, with an adapted body mount.
- I have to be able to fit a proper battery. I can't use a separate battery for every model.
